Nancy Akers Kiser
Nancy Akers Kiser, formerly of Grayson, KY, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Windsor Care Center in Mount Sterling, KY. She was four days short of her 90th birthday. Nancy was born in the coal fields of Floyd County, Ky in the city of Auxier, on June 6, during the depression and drought of 1930. She attended her first two years of school at Van Lear Elementary, in Johnson County, KY. Her family then moved to Iron Hill, KY to a big mountaintop farm that is now known as Springhill Dairy Farm. She attended a one-room school at Iron Hill until she went to high school. She graduated from Carter High School, and went to Berea College, but finished her studies at Morehead State University, with a Bachelor's Degree and Master's equivalent in Early Childhood Education with an emphasis on preschool. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse at Rattlesnake Ridge, then taught at Hitchins Elementary for a short time, and finished her teaching career at Carter Elementary where she taught kindergarten, fourth grade, and home bound. She retired from teaching after 20 years and spent her time enjoying her children, writing hymns and children's stories, and oil painting. She was an excellent cook, as was her mother. She enjoyed playing organ and piano from time to time at Bagby Methodist Church in Grayson, where she was a member. She also played piano for the residents of Windsor Care Center on a regular basis.
She is survived by one daughter, Cassandra "Sandy" Jude (Lowell) Winchester, KY, four sons, Randy Kiser of Carter, KY, Kim Kiser of Olive Hill, KY, Michael Kiser (Leigh) of Rockmart, GA, Steve Kiser (Marsha) of Mantachie, MS and a son-in-law, Ike Oakley of Olive Hill, KY. She had fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She also leaves behind a beloved sister-in-law, Donna Lou Akers; her oldest and dearest friend, Flora Gibson McDavid, and several neices and nephews.
She was the last surviving child of Norman and Flossie Marshall Akers who preceded her in death, along with a beloved daughter, Belinda Oakley, two sisters, Barbara Huffman (Ralph) and Joann McDavid Hall, two brothers, Don Akers (Myrtle) and Eugene Akers, and the father of her children, Bradley Kiser.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 6, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, Bill Burnett, minister. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Grayson.

Sandy, thank you for the opportunity to see Aunt Nancy last September. You have always been so loving, kind and gracious, just like your mama and Mammaw. Family was so important to her, and we KNEW she loved us all. It has been a grand, wonderful reunion in Heaven, and we are left bereft, but with precious memories. Also sending love and prayers to Randy, Kim, Michael and Stevie and their families. Linda. Aunt Nancy and Uncle Bradley surely had some of the finest children. I can almost hear the laughter (my terrified screams) of all of us on the swinging bridge, running to see kittens in the barn and having the best spaghetti ever on the front porch! Oh, how we will all miss her! Mom and I are sharing memories of the family every day, so sad this pandemic is separating us.

I was saddened to hear of Nancy's death - she was a beloved member of Bagby Methodist Church and really missed coming to church when her health prevented it. She loved my mother, Margie Womack, and Mom loved her back, as did many church members. I remember Nancy bringing her famous rolls to church -- after she moved it was such fun for us to find that she had written her roll recipe on the inside of a kitchen cabinet - - how clever! She also served the church by playing the organ during a time we were without an organist. I didn't know she was an accomplished artist until I purchased one of her oil paintings at a church sale - I am proud to have that to remember her by. It is always a great loss for a church with we lose one of our elderly members because of the history we lose with them, but I am blessed to have known Nancy and know she will be missed by family and friends.

My Aunt Nancy was so special to us. I hardly have ever known anyone so beautiful, talented and loving as her. My Mom (Donna Akers) and Aunt Nancy never thought of each other as sister-in-law’s, but as true sisters. They had so much in common. They would call each other and talk as much as possible and they both loved catching up on families and friends. Until recently, when I would come to Grayson to put flowers on my relatives’ graves, I would notice that Aunt Nancy had been there at some time doing the same. I would try to visit her when possible while I was there, and it was always a great visit. I loved hearing her talk about Mamaw (Flossie) and Papaw (Narmon) Akers and my Uncle Don (who we lost way too early), my Dad Gene and her sisters my Aunt Barbara and Aunt Joann. When Sandy called me this week and asked if I could help with the service on Saturday, I was truly heartbroken to not be able to do this for Aunt Nancy and for Sandy and Randy, Kim, Michael and Steve. because I am in covid virus quarantine with my wife Pam who is undergoing surgery June 12th. I know my Mom Donna Lou is heartbroken that she cannot be there to commemorate Aunt Nancy’s life and share the grief of loss with all you children. She is quarantined in her unassisted living facility in Alabama. Aunt Nancy did so much for all of us in our lives, and we are so much better for her. She is now reunited with her Mom and Dad and all her brothers and sisters and her daughter Linda and they are celebrating and awaiting our arrival to the reunion that will far surpass any of those in the mountaintop in Iron Hill. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
